The short answer: yes, and for most stores it is already switched on. Since 13 October 2026, an AI assistant connected to Shopify’s new Shop MCP server can search more than a billion products and, once a signed-in shopper confirms the total and the payment method, complete the order with Shop Pay. Shopify’s agentic storefronts feature, active by default for eligible stores, lists products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta’s Muse. You remain the seller and the order lands in your Shopify admin like any other. Whether an assistant recommends your products, charges the correct price and lets you measure the sale depends on four things inside your store: product data, checkout rules, payment options and tracking.
How Shopify Opened Its Stores to AI Agents
| Date | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 10 December 2025 | Agentic storefronts announced: one setup in the admin to sell through AI platforms, starting with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot | Shopify |
| 11 January 2026 | Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for agent purchases built with Google; Copilot Checkout; Google AI Mode and Gemini announced as coming | Shopify |
| 30 June 2026 | Shopify Scripts deactivated; custom discount and shipping logic must run on Shopify Functions | Shopify Help Center |
| 26 August 2026 | Deadline to replace the old Thank you and Order status pages; stores that had not upgraded were moved automatically | Shopify Help Center |
| 21 September 2026 | Shopify partners with Meta so its Muse assistant can check out with Shop Pay on Shopify stores, a day after Amazon blocked Muse from its own site | PYMNTS |
| 28 September 2026 | Browser-based agents can complete checkout on Shopify stores, not only fill carts | TechCrunch, Shopify |
| 13 October 2026 | Shop MCP: catalogue search, carts and Shop Pay checkout for any connected assistant or app | Shopify |
There are now two routes into your checkout. A server-side assistant uses Shop MCP and never loads your storefront. A browser-based agent works inside the shopper’s own browser and reads and fills your checkout page through a set of defined tools. In both cases the agent must show the shopper the order and total and receive approval before it places the order, and it hands control back when the bank asks for verification. ChatGPT works differently again: the buyer is sent to your own online store checkout inside ChatGPT’s browser.
Not every retailer has made the same choice. Amazon blocked Meta’s assistant from its store, citing the risk of an agent capturing customer credentials, and TechCrunch reports that some other large retailers are refusing agent purchases too. Shopify went the other way and made its merchants reachable by default. Each store can still decide channel by channel, under Sales channels, then Agentic, in the Shopify admin.
What an AI Agent Reads, and What It Never Sees
- Product data, not page design. An assistant compares titles, attributes, variants, prices, stock and policies. Shopify’s catalogue infers categories and attributes on its own, but it can only work with what you have entered. Shopify lets merchants group products by standard attributes and metafields and supply policies and answers through its Knowledge Base app, so a store that fills these in gives the assistant more to recommend it on.
- Rules that live in checkout, not in your theme. A server-side agent never opens your product or cart pages, so any discount, bundle or shipping rule that depends on theme code does not apply to its order. Rules that ran as Shopify Scripts already stopped on 30 June 2026. Whatever replaced them has to run in Shopify’s checkout itself, through Shopify Functions or an app built on them.
- Payment options the channel supports. Agent checkouts are built around Shop Pay, and the browser route does not accept new card details at all: the shopper uses a saved Shop Pay card. Stores in the Gulf and Pakistan that rely on Tabby, Tamara or cash on delivery should check which of those options each AI channel actually offers before counting on agent sales.
- Accurate stock. Shopify keeps prices and inventory current across AI channels, but only as current as the figures in your store. If stock is updated from the warehouse once a day, an assistant can sell what you no longer have.
Why Your Analytics May Undercount These Sales
Orders from AI channels carry channel or referrer attribution in the Shopify admin. Your other reports may not see them. An order placed through Shop MCP never passes through the storefront pages where most tracking tags run, and any purchase tracking that still depended on the old Thank you page scripts had to be rebuilt after 26 August 2026. If your advertising platforms report fewer conversions than your admin shows orders, agent purchases and lost tracking are the first two places to look. Reconcile against the admin, not the ad dashboard.
A Six-Point Checklist for This Quarter
- Decide your channels. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and choose which AI channels you sell on and whether direct checkout is allowed in each. Products that need fitting advice, regulated items or negotiated prices may be better kept out.
- Complete the product data. Clear titles, every variant with its own attributes, the metafields your category needs, and shipping, returns and warranty policies written in plain language.
- Move pricing rules into checkout. Review the Shopify Scripts customisations report in your admin, then confirm that every discount, bundle and shipping rule now runs as a Shopify Function or a Functions-based app.
- Connect stock to the source. Sync inventory and prices from your ERP or warehouse system often enough that an assistant cannot sell an item you no longer hold.
- Place a test order through an assistant. Check the price, the discount, shipping, tax, the payment options offered and how the order appears in your admin. Repeat for a checkout that mixes delivery and store pickup, a case the browser route does not support.
- Reconcile measurement. Compare AI channel orders in the admin with Google Analytics and your ad platforms, and rebuild any purchase tracking that was lost when the Thank you page changed.
Where SoftwareBiz fits. Our eCommerce development team audits Shopify and Shopify Plus stores for agent readiness: product data and metafields, discount and shipping rules rebuilt as Shopify Functions, checkout and payment options for each market, and a test order through each AI channel you choose to sell on. Where stock and prices come from another system, our ERP integration work keeps the store, the warehouse and the AI channels on the same figures. Our analytics and business intelligence team then reconciles agent orders with your Google Analytics and advertising data, so the channel is measured on what it actually sells.
What to Do This Week
Open the Agentic page in your Shopify admin and note which channels are already live for your store. Then ask an assistant to find one of your best-selling products and compare its answer with your product page: the gaps it shows are the data to fix first. The same shift is under way in travel, where Google has started booking hotels inside its AI search; our article on AI booking and travel agencies covers what it changes for sellers whose content is not yet bookable through an API.
